march little miss sunshine

The last days we have been counting the votes and ranked the best rated movies last month. In March our little film top 10 got quite pink in my opinion. So I guess the ladies like their Pink Popcorn Friday!

The top spot however, was taken by a casual movie, getting the most votes on our site ever. So without further ado, based on your votes, here are the best movies of March — if you are interested in the best rated movies in February you can follow this link.

'The Bucket List' is a nice casual movie. After Shannon and I saw it, I wasn't too sure I was going to use it for our Cinema Saturday. It got a little too preachy for my taste -- that's what Jack Nicholson had to avoid I guess. But then Shannon said: "Nice movie, right? You are going to use it for your post, right?" This is when I got the idea of doing a little Q&A with Shannon, like Monique does at 'Movie Reviews By FAQ'. So here it goes.

What was the main reason this movie was worth your popcorn?

I liked the story about friendship. The old men, two totally different people, built up this great friendship. Which might be more important than the rest of their life. Besides that, it was just a well done feel good movie. And since I do the Pink Popcorn Friday, I like happy endings. I also liked all the little things that make life fun.

It wasn't too preachy?

No, not for my taste at least. Sometimes it might have been a little, but it was fitting for this type of movie. If you go with the flow of the movie, you won't mind at all.

What kind of people will like this movie?

Probably the kind of people who like the Pink Popcorn movies as well. But it is actually right for everyone who likes to see a movie that makes you feel good and appreciate life a bit more. You never know when it will end, so just make the best of it.

So why should people go and see this movie?

It will make you laugh and maybe even let you shed a little tear, but mostly it's just a fun movie with a small message.

It’s just before Christmas and they both desperately want to get away for a while. They find each other on the internet and decide to swap houses for a two week during holiday. Both are enjoying their time without men, but not for long, since love ends up finding them anyway.

I must say, at first I thought it was a bit of a weird combination of actors. Somehow, I find all of them together in a romantic comedy a bit unusual. But, when I was watching the movie it turned out to work very well. It actually gives this movie a nice touch, to see two complete different types of couples. The one with Cameron and Jude is kind of the perfect styled and well-known version. While Kate and Jack are a surpisingly fun to watch couple.

Another nice aspect of this movie was the sense of humour of Jack Black, which sets a new tone to a romantic comedy. It isn’t the slapstick humour as we know it from his other comical movies, but still a different kind of humour then we usually see. It really did created some good scenes.

Since this is already the 3rd movie from Nancy Meyers I discussed, I think it’s clear I am quite a fan of hers. If you liked this movie too, perhaps you should check out ‘What Women Want’ and ‘Something’s Gotta Give’ as well.

There are a number of things I like about Kim Ki-duk. First of all, he's a great and intelligent writer. The characters he creates are always interesting and unusual. But also his direction. He is always creating beautiful scenes like in 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring.' Always looking for something different, a different perspective as you might say. Sometimes in metaphors and sometimes in dialogs or acting.

Samaria is just like it. Unusual and beautiful pictures, like the one on top, combined with the story about a girl, who does this crazy thing to get in the mind of her girlfriend. But Kim Ki-duk always pulls it off and keeps it convincing. Well, always, I might say he learned, since 'Address Unknown' (2001) wasn't his best effort.

Unfortunately, it has been a while since I saw this movie. But I'm planning on seeing it again soon. As I said, his movies impress on many levels, which makes it worth rewatching. Shannon is mostly not into serious Asian cinema, but I think even she quite enjoyed this Korean drama.

  Worth the Popcorn?
April 2nd, 2008 by jamesd

We started this blog with the idea of doing a movie every day. But not just a random movie, we had to like it too. Like recommending a movie to your friends. But now we need your help. We need recommendations ourselves.

You might think doing a movie ‘worth the popcorn’ every day is not that hard. But when we got into the routine of doing a post every day, we soon found out one day we will run out of movies. Keeping up with the posts, we almost have to watch a movie a day. And if we don’t like it, there’s no post.

So this is why I ask you. Which movies are worth your popcorn? I’m asking you, because you have good taste. You are reading this after all. ;) I’m eager to find out what you enjoy. Especially documentaries would be welcome, we’re running out of those pretty fast.
