Magnolia is the story of several stories brought to one. And by that I don’t mean two or three, but really, several. First we have Frank T.J. Mackey, the self-proclaimed women expert and motivational speaker. Phil Parma, taking care of his cancer patient Earl Partridge. Linda Partridge, who can’t handle her dying husband and struggles with her addiction. And then there’s also a tv host, a game show star and a former game show star. I hope I didn’t miss any.. O, yeah, there’s a cop dealing with a dope addict, who he actually kinda likes.
In protest of Paul Thomas Anderson not winning any Oscars for 'There Will be Blood' last night (arguably it wasn't worth one either), here's one of his earlier, but best rated works. The film is not only directed, but also written by this brilliant filmmaker. As he once said himself: 'I guess the way that I really feel is that Magnolia is, for better or worse, the best movie I'll ever make.'
Very human and emotional, but always on the unusual or funny side. Nifty getting all stories together and supported by a very well performing cast -- even Cruise receives little complain. Accompanied by the sounds of Aimee Mann, this is indeed a project you'll probably only create once in a lifetime.
Because the earth got too dirty for mankind to live in, everybody had to leave — bye people! A bunch of robots had to stay around to clean up the place. However, the plan to save the earth failed miserably and there was only one robot left to fulfill his duties, Wall-e. But during the years, Wall-e developed a personality. And when Eve, a female robot, visits earth, he soon falls in love with her. Only to find out that Eve doesn’t have any feeling, at all.
Wall-e is the new baby of Andrew Stanton, also responsible for Finding Nemo. One of the better Pixar/Disney collaborations if you ask me. The most recent trailer, featuring Eve for the first time, shows an even more promising Wall-e than before. Not to mention the stunning visuals we saw in the earlier trailers. And going by their track record, I'd say it's safe to say we can get ready for another entertaining and funny movie, with a very big heart.
When Sweeney Todd was a young barber, he had a beautiful wife. But somebody else had an eye on her too. And he invented a scheme to get her. He sentenced Todd for a crime he did not commit and shipped him away. Several years later, grown into a different man, Todd comes back for vengeance. Unstoppable and more than just crazy.
Let me first tell you, I'm not the musical movie type. And you shouldn't be put off by this either. On the other hand, if you are a fan of those movies, I wouldn't be sure this is your cup of tea either. It's a very gritty alternative to the Moulin Rouges and Fames. It is as if they made it this way purposely, not to fall in this category.
The story is one about the blindness of vengeance. And the tempo is very good, unlike some musicals that go into the same main chores over and over. Johnny Depp and Helena Carter give an especially great performance, combined with the always original Tim Burton.
The funny thing is, I'm not a Burton fan either. I liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but that's about it. Somehow, this movie seems less naive than the others, probably due to the unique script. Anyway, movies are for watching. And now I'm getting to the point that I'm wasting your time and you could be watching already. So go!
Andie works as a columnist for Composure Magazine and writes columns starting with “How to…”. After quite a while she decides that it is time for something new, something more serious. She wants to write an article that is more substantial. But before she is allowed to, she has to write her last how to: “How to lose a guy in 10 days”.
At the same time, Benjamin has to prove he can get a girl to fall in love with him within 10 days. This, in order to win the leading position of a major campaign for a diamond merchant. After a while Andie and Benjamin are actually starting to like each other. But does a relationship based on a bet from both sides even have a chance?
When I first heard about this movie, I didn’t expect too much from it. The story itself isn’t too brilliant. I mean what are the odds that two persons who have pretty much the same bet, will meet each other? But as a real chick-flick movie lover, I put my preconception aside and watched and…… totally loved it! Kate Hudson has done a real good job performing the crazy girlfriend who does everything wrong. A girlfriend like that is seriously your worst nightmare. The chemistry between Kate and Matthew is just perfect. Their performances were what made this movie rise above the mediocre.
Personally, I watched this movie about 3 times already and while writing this post, I am already planning my next popcorn night with this movie!
During the Japanese occupation of Shanghai in WWII, Wong gets asked to act in a political play. When the group realizes they want to make a greater impact, they set up a plan to assassinate the Japanese collaborator Yee. Using her acting abilities, Wong has to go extremely far to satisfy his needs and keep him unsuspicious. But how far is too far for her?
Taking a break from all the Hollywood fanfare, Ang Lee is back in his homeland to bring us another intense drama. Through the eyes of a young woman, he shows us nothing can be done without feelings. You can be the best actress around, but if you go in too deep, you will get sucked in. Setting this story during the Japanese occupation in WWII must have been a brave choice too. While he could have easily chosen a Hollywood blockbuster instead.
During the movie Ang Lee masterly skates on the line of friendship, sacrifice, betrayal and lust. Not only displayed flawlessly by actress Wei Tang, but even more so by actor Tony Leung Chiu Wai (2046). The only downside to this is, that the story needs a good hour to really develop. So take something to read with you if you're not up to that.
