After losing the woman of his life, Anderson is convinced he will never find true love again. His best friend tries to get him out of his house and more into the open, but has a hard time trying. When he is getting a little fed up with it, Anderson makes a sarcastic move to please his friend. He asks the first girl he sees to marry him… but what’s next when she decides to say yes?
For some of you the movie is probably known as “The Pleasure of Your Company” or even as “The Next Girl I See”. But when I saw it in the cinema it was called “Wedding Daze”… Honestly, I must say all of those different names are a bit confusing, but the movie is the same and that’s what it’s about right?
Of course I agree if you say it is hard to believe someone asks a stranger to marry him. And even harder to believe to see her saying yes and actually try to make things work. But when you put your first reactions aside and just go with the story, you will find yourself enjoying it! Some of the situations are really weird and even awkward, but that is what makes this movie so hilarious and enjoyable.
Besides the funny and crazy aspects of this movie, which are already making this movie worth the popcorn, there is a small message behind the story. Love comes when you expect it the least and it’s not always how you think it should be. But when love is around, just enjoy it!
After getting a promotion, Alison and her sister decide to celebrate by going a night out. In the bar they meet a group of guys and end up drinking with them all night long. The next morning Alison wakes up with Ben, one of the guys from the bar, to discover they had sex the night before. While they clearly don’t have much in common, they decide to keep it with the one-night stand. Untill 8 weeks later when Alison finds out she got knocked up by Ben.
What made this movie totally worth the pink popcorn were the awkward and humoristic scenes. I loved the scene in which Alison tells Ben that she is pregnant. Also the scenes at Alison’s work with the sarcastic colleague Jill are seriously hilarious.
Although I liked the humoristic scenes the most in this movie, there still is a nice romantic touch to it. In order not to spoil it for those who haven’t seen the movie just yet, I won’t say too much about it. But I liked the fact that you don’t really expect it to happen, but as most Pink Popcorn movies it creates a happy ending.
Helen is living the life she has always wanted: working at a top modeling agency, living in New York city and enjoying life with fashion shows and nights out at the best clubs in town. Everything seems to be going just the way it’s supposed to be, but then she receives a terrible phone call. Her sister and brother-in-law died in a car accident. Her life is getting upside down when custody over their three children is left with Helen. Will she manage to change her life drastically to actually raise those three children, instead of being just a cool aunt?
Again a sweet movie with a happy ending. But although most of the Pink Popcorn Friday movies have something in common, every movie still has its own sparkle. It’s own unique aspect which gives you a different story every week, but the same happy and warm feeling inside.
This happens with Raising Helen as well. It would be horrible to lose your parents at such a young age in a car accident, but then being raised by your cool aunt isn’t actually that bad. It’s like going on a sleep-over for quite a while, but at some point the children need a little more than that. It’s nice to see how the children are handling the loss of their parents in their own way, and Helen helping them in their process.
This movie isn’t so much about pointing out the love between a man and a woman, but more the importance of having a family and the strong love between the family members.
Amanda, who lives in Los Angeles, has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend. Iris, who lives in England, is also facing some problems with men, when the love of her life is announcing his engagement… with another woman. It’s just before Christmas and they both desperately want to get away for a while. They find each other on the internet and decide to swap houses for a two week during holiday. Both are enjoying their time without men, but not for long, since love ends up finding them anyway.
I must say, at first I thought it was a bit of a weird combination of actors. Somehow, I find all of them together in a romantic comedy a bit unusual. But, when I was watching the movie it turned out to work very well. It actually gives this movie a nice touch, to see two complete different types of couples. The one with Cameron and Jude is kind of the perfect styled and well-known version. While Kate and Jack are a surpisingly fun to watch couple.
Another nice aspect of this movie was the sense of humour of Jack Black, which sets a new tone to a romantic comedy. It isn’t the slapstick humour as we know it from his other comical movies, but still a different kind of humour then we usually see. It really did created some good scenes.
Since this is already the 3rd movie from Nancy Meyers I discussed, I think it’s clear I am quite a fan of hers. If you liked this movie too, perhaps you should check out ‘What Women Want’ and ‘Something’s Gotta Give’ as well.
Alex Fletcher, a former member of the 80’s band Pop, hasn’t really been successful with his solo-career. Therefore, he is still performing with the old hits they had with his band Pop. His manager isn’t giving up on him and arranges a meeting with the successful teen singer Cora Corman. Alex gets the chance to be promoted in a new tv show, as long as he finishes a new song for Cora within a week. Unfortunately, he isn’t quite a songwriter either and is in desperate need of help. Could the girl who is “just there to cater the plants” help him out?
The movie starts with a hilarious opening, in which you see Hugh with his 80’s band Pop. He is singing quite a catchy song and I think that’s exactly what is making this movie worth watching. During the movie there are several songs and the process of creating them is very funny to watch. The main song even stayed in my head for quite some time!
Personally, I usually love movies with Drew Barrymore, and watching a movie with Hugh Grant isn’t exactly a punishment either. So, watching a movie with them together is quite a treat.
All in all, a cute and enjoyable love story that will make you smile.
"Man you forgot two major releases for this year! Wall-E and Batman: The Dark Knight! Anyways, I agree with all of your sentiments. We pay more each [....]"
