about the movie

Fin, born with dwarfism, always tried to live a nice and quiet life. And when his friend dies and he inherits an abandoned train depot in New Jersey, he decides to move there. Without much interest to meet new people, he just can’t avoid the contact with some of the people in his new town. And when a woman accidently tries to run him over (twice), he starts to find the people that somehow share his solitude.

This was the first time I saw Peter Dinklage in a big role and I must say it was kind of a surprise. It's not that you think people with dwarfism can't play great roles, it's more like you don't expect them to. Or better yet, Hollywood doesn't give them the opportunity to. Have some slow moments in your movie? Call for a dwarf, right? That will bring in some laughs.

When you watch Peter Dinklage, you start to forget about his size, until the movie brings it up again. Which of course, makes you root for him if some people start talking about the 7 dwarfs in his presence. And you can imagine Dinklage to have some baggage to play this part. He shows us that there's nothing wrong with wanting to be left alone. You have these moments where you don't want to be bothered, but we're all human and sometimes we have to make that connection. And this is how some unrelated people accidently meet in their solitude and build up a friendship.

Telling you this story, it may sound like a pretty serious drama. However, the movie actually is quite quirky and warm. But as I said, watch this movie for Dinklage. A very charismatic, interesting and talented actor, who makes this good movie great.

about the movie

Alex is just coming out of prison when an overly chatty 19 year-old hitchhiker bugs him for a ride. Annoyed, he finally agrees to take her. But not soon after they leave, they get in a serious car accident. This forces Alex to go on a journey to the mother of the hitchhiker. But the journey turns out quite different than expected. And this is not only caused by the high-functioning autistic mother.

The premise of this movie may sound heavy, but surprisingly it is actually an uplifting and charming little movie. Not knowing an autistic person myself, I can't be the real judge of Sigourney Weaver’s performance. But for the 'untrained eye', she is convincing in every possible way. The display of autism is real and sometimes funny as it can be. But the movie is never making fun of the subject and seems to stay credible.

Sigourney Weaver is equally challenged by Alan Rickmann, playing a refreshingly different role than his sometimes plain bad guy characters. And who in his way is challenged by Carrie-Anne Moss. But ultimately, she is really outdone by the two old-timers. They create this chemistry that almost is impossible to fake. It's just a nice personal little film to accompany you on some cold winter Sunday afternoon.

Half Nelson. Is it the craftsmanship of Ryan Fleck or Ryan Gosling? I guess we should say Ryan Fleck, he's the director and co-writer after all. But if it wasn't for Ryan Gosling, I'm not sure if we would be talking about this movie. He gives such a passionate and touching performance.

On the other side though, would we be talking about Gosling if it wasn't for this story? A very real and emotional journey. It's sad, while inspiring. And a political comment, without being preachy -- or preaching at all. But it also shows some problems are just too complex. And we shouldn't always be looking for a plain right or wrong.

tape

about the movie

Staying in a shabby motel in Lansing, low-rank drug dealer and heavy drinker Vince invites his old high school friend. He’s trying to find out what happened between John and Amy, that one night at their school about 10 years ago. And he’s not planning to stop digging until his version of the story has been proven.

Tape is based on a three-character, one-act play and therefore almost solely depending on its actors and story. And well, they are both worthwhile. Imagine a suspenseful drama you are overhearing when some people arguing. But now, you're overhearing the follow-up argument in their private place and on your tv screen. Linklater makes a daring move by making this one stage movie and is easily able to pull it off.

about the movie

1983, 12-year-old badass Shaun doesn’t fit in anywhere. He gets into fights everywhere and he has given up on almost everyone. Pissed about a fight at school, he walks back home where he meets Woody and his friends, a bunch of skinheads hanging around on the street. Soon he becomes part of the gang and parties just like all of them. But one night, old school Combo comes back from prison and things start to change.

This is a brilliant capture of the 80's England and one boy's search for belonging. Mixed with a documentary style, it is engaging and funny, but frightening at times. There's so much depth in about every character, it's clear the director didn't want to display a stereotypical subculture. As I understand, this is also because of the semi-autobiographical story. Proving Shane Meadows is a director to keep an eye one.
