crazy love

about the movie

In the late fifties, Burt and Linda started something that would end in ‘crazy love’. Burt wasn’t handsome, but he was a very wealthy attorney. He owned a club and was exiting to Linda. What she didn’t know is, that Burt already was married and had a disabled daughter. She broke up after she found out. But Burt’s ego couldn’t handle this and he hired a couple of lowlifes to throw lye into her face – something like acid. “If I can’t have you, no one else will have you, and when I get through with you, no one else will want you.” This left her disfigured and almost blind. But 16 years later.. they got married.

Would this have been a fictional movie, you would have said "yeah, right..", while shaking your head. But since it is a tale well documented by all sorts of media and even told by the two people themselves, this is a totally different story. If you ever read a weird article in the newspaper and wanted to know what was the real deal, this is the movie behind that story.

All this lye throwing and cheating happened way before I was born, so I didn't know anything about the story. Nonetheless, I was easily captivated by the way this happened and how these two people started to think. Most of the time you think, what is this woman doing? But there's this little light-bulb that kind of understands. Just for a minute, before it pops out again and gets too much. Cleverly edited and brought in a humorous way, this documentary is proving non-fiction can be better than fiction. Just because it's simply not fiction.

Also, just for the hell of it. If you saw the last episode of Lost (in the last week of February), the 'crazy' guy on the boat is Fisher Stevens, the co-director of this movie. Just wanted to share.

about the movie

Fin, born with dwarfism, always tried to live a nice and quiet life. And when his friend dies and he inherits an abandoned train depot in New Jersey, he decides to move there. Without much interest to meet new people, he just can’t avoid the contact with some of the people in his new town. And when a woman accidently tries to run him over (twice), he starts to find the people that somehow share his solitude.

This was the first time I saw Peter Dinklage in a big role and I must say it was kind of a surprise. It's not that you think people with dwarfism can't play great roles, it's more like you don't expect them to. Or better yet, Hollywood doesn't give them the opportunity to. Have some slow moments in your movie? Call for a dwarf, right? That will bring in some laughs.

When you watch Peter Dinklage, you start to forget about his size, until the movie brings it up again. Which of course, makes you root for him if some people start talking about the 7 dwarfs in his presence. And you can imagine Dinklage to have some baggage to play this part. He shows us that there's nothing wrong with wanting to be left alone. You have these moments where you don't want to be bothered, but we're all human and sometimes we have to make that connection. And this is how some unrelated people accidently meet in their solitude and build up a friendship.

Telling you this story, it may sound like a pretty serious drama. However, the movie actually is quite quirky and warm. But as I said, watch this movie for Dinklage. A very charismatic, interesting and talented actor, who makes this good movie great.

ice age

about the movie

We’re staying in the feel good genre for a day, tomorrow is Indie Tuesday after all:

While the world is going into an ice age, Sid, a constant babbling sloth, gets left behind for the migration. Luckily his uplifting spirit helps him to get in contact with Manny, a grumpy mammoth with no interest in Sid whatsoever. When they later find a connection in a baby they rescued, they decide to return it to the parents. But Diego, a very big teethed tiger, has an eye on this sweet little baby too.

This is probably the only movie Shannon and I have watched over and over. It's the irritating but charming Sid, the uplifting but sad story and the simple yet beautiful scenery. In the end it's probably the chemistry between Sid and Manny that does it for me. Isn't it just awesome when you can annoy someone with such passion as Sid does?

Even if you saw it before, it's just the perfect movie for a lazy Sunday afternoon. A sweet, fun and casual movie, with just about the right length before it gets tiring. A welcome refresh from all the Disneys around.

about the movie

A couple of weeks ago I already introduced the Sex and the City movie to all of you. But now it is time for an update, because there is a new trailer and with that some new information about the movie. For those of you who want it to be a complete surprise, I won’t discuss the content. But for those who are as curious as I am, go and watch it below!

The new trailer already answers quite a few questions I was asking in my last post, but is also raising quite a lot of new ones. Is Big or Carrie calling of the wedding, or will they still get married after all? Are Miranda and Steve getting separated? And is Samantha over Smith and back to old habits? Because of these questions, I just can’t wait to finally watch it in the cinema. But for now, some of the old episodes of the tv show will do perfectly well of course.

For more information about the movie, more pictures and some nice facts, check the official website and official blog of “Sex and the City: The Movie” too!

Before seeing this movie, I didn’t read the book. Some say the book is better than the movie, but most people agree on the fact that you should definitely watch this movie. The movie is really touching, because of the themes of friendship, family, human values and courage, which are subjects we can all relate to.

The actors of the young Amir and Hassan have played their roles very realistically, which made the entire movie even more touching. I couldn’t forget what Amir had done to Hassan and therefore I loved the ending in which Amir will have a second chance. Maybe we should give each other a second chance more often.
